DEVON CATTLE
The Devon, sometimes called Ruby Red Devon, is considered a rare breed today, with less than 2,000 head in the United States. England, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil also have registered herdsDevon cattle have been in North America since the coming of the Mayflower. According to the manifest of the Mayflower, Devon were the cattle brought by the Pilgrims (one bull and two cows).
Years later, George Washington raised Devon cattle on his Mount Vernon farm. A pair of these magnificent animals is still being used as oxen on that historic farm today.
And today, at PATHway Pastures, we have chosen to raise Devon cattle for a number of reasons — the ease with which they can be handled, their good utilization of our pasture grasses, and the exceptional beef quality they produce, to name a few. Research leads us to believe the Devon is the highest quality, best-tasting beef available.
